In recent weeks there have been a number of media reports regarding East Lampeter Township’s Tax Collector. At this time I would like to briefly summarize the results of actions taken by the Board of Supervisors and assure our property owners their real estate tax payments for 2017 will be properly accounted for.
In 2015 the Board of Supervisors took civil action in the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas in an effort to compel the Tax Collector to perform the required duties of this office. In 2016 a hearing was held by the Court.
The Tax Collector failed to properly reconcile the 2016 Real Estate Tax Collections. Based upon the law the Tax Collector is prohibited from continuing to perform any tax collection function in 2017. Due to this failure, the Board of Supervisors took action to appoint the Lancaster County Treasurer as the Tax Collector for 2017. This action to appoint the Lancaster County Treasurer has now been affirmed by a Court order issued on
Friday, March 17, 2017.
Therefore, for 2017, the duties of the Real Estate Tax collection function will be handled by the office of the Lancaster County Treasurer. Tax payers who have already submitted their 2017 tax payment should feel comfortable that these funds are being accounted for properly, however we still recommend that all tax payers retain their receipts, check stubs and any other documentation of these payments. Property owners who have not yet paid their 2017 tax bill should also feel comfortable making payment as instructed on the bill or by submitting payment to the Lancaster County Treasurer, PO Box 1447, 150 N Queen St, Lancaster, PA 17608.
For those property owners who have unresolved issues for prior year tax payments, please allow the Lancaster County Treasurer’s office some time to gather information and make determinations regarding these issues. Efforts will then be made to provide information to each tax payer regarding the steps that are needed to address these matters and achieve a complete resolution.
We wish to thank you for your patience and understanding as we have been working to address these issues.
